3 HVAC Maintenance Tips For the Changing Season

Let’s face it, no one wants summer to end. As tempting as it might be to take full advantage of the fleeting warm weather, it’s time to focus on preparing your system for winter. If you don’t perform preventative maintenance now, you may be faced with unpleasant breakdowns that will make the winter season feel a whole lot colder!

Trim Back Landscaping Around Unit

In order for your hvac system to operate at optimal efficiency during the summer or winter months, it requires proper air flow in and out of the system. Thus, it is recommended that all foliage be trimmed back at least 2ft from your outdoor unit on all sides. In addition to trimming back bushes and shrubs, all grass should be mowed, dead tree limbs removed and gutters overhead should be cleared. This will ensure that your unit is free of debris that could damage or compromise the efficiency of your system.

Change Your Air Filters

Though you should be changing your filters at least once every three months, sometimes these things can slip through the cracks. However, it is essential that you change them before winter arrives. Because your AC is running nearly 24/7 during the summer, your filters tend to clog up quickly and are left at capacity by the end of the season. This means that allergens and other airborne particles are free to circulate through the air you breathe, compromising your indoor air quality and worsening breathing complications in those with respiratory conditions such as asthma.

Heating System Maintenance

It’s best to perform annual maintenance on your home comfort systems, and the end of the summer is the perfect time to prepare your heating unit for the upcoming chilly season. Scheduling a maintenance checkup will ensure that your heating system will run efficiently all winter long and detect any minor problems that may become more serious over time. Because the last thing you want in the middle of winter is to be left out in the cold!
